If you’re looking for a gluten free cafe that serves delicious patisserie and cakes to eat in or take away, then L’Etoile Salon de The is the place in Edinburgh!
I had already been warned to get there early as, not surprisingly, these cakes and treats are so beautifully made, they are really popular. My selection, which was destined for Friday afternoon tea in the garden, included carrot cake, pear and almond tart and a custard flan. They have a much wider selection – all of which look fantastic – and I will be going along one morning soon for an additional taste test.
The carrot cake was dense and spicy, with strong icing which worked well on a hot day. The portion was generous and the cake was super-moist – almost the perfect carrot cake (which is my favourite). The tarts too, were just perfect. The pear and almond tart was light and full of flavour; and the custard tart was just tasty and delicious – I truly wished we were not sharing them! Now top of my list for beautiful treats.
The service was super-friendly, all care is taken about contamination and the cakes are made on-site. You can also sit in for lunches, coffee and of course, these treats. Just close to the Grassmarket, it’s easy to reach from the Old Town and yet is a little haven of calm.
