Gluten Free Shops Edinburgh

I am often asked where the best gluten free food shops are in Edinburgh.  Here is a quick round-up of some favourites:

Supermarkets
The supermarkets have good Free From ranges and as residents will attest, there are large and small supermarkets with free from sections all over town:

Sainsburys: has recently expanded its free from range with a focus on quality and choice.  The larger stores (Craigleith, Straiton, Cameron Toll, Slateford) have extensive aisles.  The smaller, in-town, stores inevitably have a more limited range. The freezer sections are good and sell the Genius pastry range.

Tesco: Tesco also has a good free from selection and the larger stores (Colinton, Hermiston Gait, Corstorphine and others) will have a good stock of food.  As with Sainsburys, the smaller stores have a more limited section.  Large Tescos sell the Dr Oetker gluten free pizzas and McCain oven chips.

Morrisons: Morrisons has recently expanded its range and there are larger stores dotted around town (Gilmerton, Ferry Road, Hunters Tryst)

Asda: Those huge 24 hour Asdas have good free from aisles and there is a focus on value, which means some of the GF choices will not break the bank.

Waitrose: There are two stores in Edinburgh (Comely Bank, Morningside).  The free from aisles are not huge, but the quality is good.

Wholefood Stores:
Real Foods: Brougham Place, Tolcross; Broughton Street – great range of foods and flours
Earthy: Cannonmills; Causewayside; Portobello – also sells Findlaters GF bread
Holland & Barrett: Rose Street; Princes Street (has a big range); Cameron Toll – you can order online and collect from the store too
181 Deli: Bruntsfield – has the best range of Findlaters GF bread I have found

Other places to try:
Dig-in Bruntsfield has a selection at the back of the shop
Archipelago on  Dundas Street and Loudons on Fountainbridge sell superb GF loaves to take away
Cranachan & Crowdie on the Royal Mile (Canongate) is a wonderful place and sells a selection of quality Scottish products – including the Findlays gluten free haggis and black puddings. Recent review
