Eating good quality gluten free food, mainly in Edinburgh

The Wee Restaurant

The Wee Restaurant is immediately obvious as an example of good space planning!  Every corner has been made use of and with it’s nice atmosphere and care around gluten free dining, this is Scottish cooking guaranteed to make you smile.

Set up steep stairs from Frederick Street in the New Town, The Wee Restaurant has a nice calm atmosphere and friendly service.  I enjoyed a light lunch here on a gorgeous, Edinburgh sunny day and sitting in the window was a good place to be!

You know that sinking feeling when your fellow gluten-eaters are brought boards of bread with quality butter?  Well I didn’t get that, as I was presented with a well laid out board holding three crackers (Nairns Wholemeal), a tiny bowl of butter and another of the most deliciously salty tapenade.  Usually I think the Nairns crackers are better when they have seeds or pepper in them, but the plain flavour here just allowed me to taste that tapenade – really good!  And look at the picture – it just looked gorgeous. (and yes, the board was free from contamination)

There is a daily specials menu which is worth seeking out and then a more substantial a la carte.  I chose salmon with tiny scallops, peas, samphire and broad beans with a delicious creamy sauce from the a la carte as we were only having one course.  For a sunny day lunch, the combination was perfect and the crispy skin brought a crunch. Where my gluten-eating friend had little herby gnocchi on her plate, I had some good baby potatoes.

To follow we just had some good coffee and a tiny plate of delicious chocolate petit fours.

Other fab looking meals on offer included risottos, steaks and tasty looking seasonal fish options too.  I will definitely go back when hungrier to test out more as I have no doubt the whole menu is delicious.

The Wee Restaurant represents good quality Scottish cooking with flair, flavour and with a nod to good value too.  The care and diligence around my gluten free dining was exceptional and with no need for a special menu because of the waiting staff knowledge, this was a great meal option.
