The Perch is a new restaurant on Hanover Street, which opened in November 2018. I thought it worth dropping by for lunch to check out its gluten free credentials.
It was a great spot for a working lunch as it was quiet but gently buzzing. And it was also great as the GF choices are pretty extensive! (see menu picture below)
While we were having just a main course ( I was working, after all), I did a good study of the menu, which had been helpful marked up for my benefit. Four of the starters were good for GF including pate, soup, poached egg on asparagus and the bread and oils.
The mains really left me spoilt for choice with burgers, beef, lamb, fish, salad and risotto all available gluten free. I was particularly taken with the Moroccan flavoured lamb on the specials menu, but in the end went for the Market Fish of the Day. A crispy skinned piece of pan fried trout with garlic butter, wilted greens and crispy potatoes was a good choice!
The potatoes were just the right number for a lunch – I was not carb loading, unlike my gluten eating companion who had a big bowl of macaroni cheese and garlic bread! The wilted greens were just delicious and slightly crunchy and the fish had a blob of garlic butter and was beautifully cooked and really succulent. I was really happy with the meal, though I could see from spying other tables, that all of the food is well presented and looks seriously tasty.
Scrutinising the pudding menu, I discovered a crème brulee with forest fruits or a sorbet as the only GF options, but as pudding is rarely in my lunchtime plans, I was very happy with a peppermint tea.
The Perch offers well cooked food, a good gluten free menu, some seriously friendly and professional service and what looks like a nice selection of gins! I will need to come back in the evening to try them out and to test more of the excellent menu.
I have only one question about The Perch and that is, why is it not jam-packed at lunchtime? The menu is seriously good value and the food is great – it’s an ideal lunch spot and, put simply, the new owners could do with some more reviews to get people in. Highly recommended – put it on your list!
Since writing this review, The Perch has had so much interest from customers asking for GF, they have launched a fully gluten free menu. What a bunch of food heroes!
