Eating good quality gluten free food, mainly in Edinburgh

restaurant

Ka Pao

Gluten free choices at the St James Quarter restaurants are turning out to be excellent!  This week we tried out the fabulous, South East Asian inspired, Ka Pao.

The flavours at Ka Pao leap off the plate and are zingy, varied and imaginative.  The whole meal was a thrill of flavour and with so many sharing plates to choose from, there was such a variety of choice.

As we all know, sharing plates are usually best avoided, with others dunking and switching spoons around, but not here!

If you check out the menu online you will see already that the allergy content of any meal is marked clearly using an numerical system.  Add to that, on arrival they cross out the things you can’t have and then highlight the ones that can be GF with just a little tweak.  This is the most careful and clear service, making you confident they’re going to get it right.  (This is in sharp contrast to an excellent meal I had recently at Dulse, but which was punctuated with anxiety that they were getting it right – they did, but the communication was muddled)

Ka Pao doesn’t just serve GF to the coeliac – they check again and again as they deliver dishes to the table and highlight that the gluten bits are removed and served on the side (some tasty looking onions!) and we were hugely impressed by their care and attention.

But the highlight is the food, of course.  We shared starters and enjoyed some spicy padron peppers, a lovely smoked trout tumble of flavours, some amazing braised cabbage and a mushroom dish I didn’t eat.  For my main course I had the most delicious coley red curry with clams and cherry tomatoes and a bowl of lovely, sticky rice.  It was the best!

Highly recommended firstly for the quality of food and secondly for the absolutely exceptional service!   Just a great experience.
