Eating good quality gluten free food, mainly in Edinburgh

Jamie’s Italian

Jamie’s Italian is a small chain of restaurants around the UK which is really making a big effort on dietary requirements.  Set in the beautifully renovated and historic Assembly Rooms on George Street, you might expect the restaurant to be quiet given it is right inside the building, but it is usually busy.  And no wonder – the food is really very good.

jamies italian gluten freeI had lunch with a group of friends who pretty much all had dietary requirements, so we really put Jamie’s to the test – and they didn’t fail.  Using nifty little gadgets, our server punched in requirements and issues alongside our choices.  We had all had a look at the menu in advance because on the website is a tick box system that shows what you can have with certain constraints.

I am always a sucker for a Caeser Salad, so chose this.  With toasted hazelnuts in place of croutons I did not miss out.  The chicken (and the chips!) were oven cooked to avoid contamination.  Apart from our chips heading off to another table accidentally, the service and food was faultless.  Another friend had gluten free buckwheat crepes with a tomato sauce and really tasty filling.

With plenty of choice, I would happily go back as there is more to try.  And although it was Saturday lunchtime and the restaurant was heaving, we were never hurried along and we had a terrific, relaxing lunch.jamies italian gluten free 2

Definitely worth trying with any dietary issues.  No gluten free bread, as usual, but at least there were chips …
