Eating good quality gluten free food, mainly in Edinburgh

restaurant

Field

Field was our restaurant of choice for a celebration this weekend, and it was a good choice to make too. Gorgeous, well cooked food and a great wine list, plus good gluten free options.  With a choice of a la carte or a set lunch, Field focuses on quality meat, but will also keep the veggies happy, with a range of meat, fish and vegetables.  There was no GF bread on offer, but I was given a tiny bowl of olives to make up for it, which suited me well.

glutenfree-fieldThere were good gluten free choices and I could have the run of the starter and main menu with just some small tweaks and one or two exceptions. It is always a good sign when my first choice is ok!

A starter of liver (most definitely not of the school dinner style) with a little potato rosti cake, was moist and delicious.  It’s smoked bacon jus was sufficiently salty without overpowering and the liver was tender and would please even the most determined liver-hater.

Mains were similarly plentiful for the gluten free eater.  Friends had great looking fish and beef, while I chose the pork with apple cider mayonnaise, celeriac and celeriac popcorn.  I could have lived without the popcorn, but the rest was tasty and the generous piece of pork was shared with my gluten-eating husband who is always a handy meal-finisher.  His partridge was really delicious and dense – potentially the best of the four choices. glutenfree-field-2

Puddings are always a bone of contention for the coeliac, but I found a choice of three and definitely chose well.  An apple panacotta with peanut parfait and brittle plus an apple crisp, was just gorgeous.  The mix of sweet and sour and a little bit tart, made this a great pudding. While my eye had wandered to the brownie option, it was not to be, but in the end I was glad – we all eat too much brownie and to have something unusual like this was so much better!

Field is a friendly little place with a definite focus on the food more than the decor.  The service was terrific and although it was quiet, it didn’t seem to matter.

The set lunch or pre-theatre dinner represents superb value for money and offers a great way to taste some fine cooking.  Add Field to your list of must-try restaurants in Edinburgh and you will not be disappointed.
