Eating good quality gluten free food, mainly in Edinburgh

Castle Terrace

You might think this review superfluous.  When you visit a restaurant with the reputation that Castle Terrace has in Edinburgh, you know there will be superb gluten free choices and a seriously fantastic meal, so I don’t really need to tell you.  Such as it was!

Castle Terrace is often cited as the best restaurant in Edinburgh and it has a great reputation for fine dining and good service.  We visited for a birthday meal this week and I was not disappointed – it lived up to its reputation.   So my review is not extensive as you do not need the details of challenges you may face and what works for a coeliac, as you might with other places – the staff were reminding me what was GF rather than me reminding them, and everything was just superb.

Tiny amuse bouches came before our starters, with little tweaks for GF.  A delicious aubergine tempura was a flavour burst and the little tricks played by the chef, making something look like an egg that was actually something else, were brilliant.  A “quails egg” on a tiny piece of toast was actually panacotta with mango!

There was plenty of choice: my starter of scallops with curry sauce was just wonderful, with a tiny popadom and mango chutney, rice and a deliciously gentle curry sauce.  For a main course I enjoyed succulent mallard with salsify; and for pudding I had a light as air caramel souffle – though I was defeated by it, being full.  With coffee we enjoyed tiny petits fours, again with a different GF choice for me.  It was all just a joyous birthday treat.

I had a miniscule disappointment when they brought me gluten free bread, only to spot a Schar ciabatta – a bit of a surprise for five star dining.  However, I am not a great bread eater and my gluten eating husband ate it instead of me.  There are better breads out there, but you don’t need it when so much wonderful food is spread out to enjoy.

Yes it is expensive and yes, this has to be a special occasion, but it is worth it!
