Lunch at the New Chapter restaurant on Eyre Place this week confirmed what I already thought – that this is one of the best new places to have opened in Edinburgh recently. The welcome is super friendly and professional and the enthusiasm of the staff is infectious.
There is a brilliant value lunch offer of two courses for £9.95 and service is speedy and efficient, ensuring you are back at your desk at the right time, having eaten some of the best food you will have tasted in a while. The team checks all meals for dietary requirements and keeps a detailed log of what is in each dish. As the lunch includes a choice of a few dishes, there is no need for a gluten free menu as the staff check the list and just know exactly what you can and cannot have, plus they make sure the chef knows about a coeliac.
My friend had plump and beautifully browned gnocchi with mushrooms and Jerusalem artichokes, which was a light and yet filling meal. I had the most delicious monkfish with potato, smoked mussels, samphire and peas – a lovely looking and tasting meal. We resisted the puddings, but did spy some beauties on the table next to us. The starters also included three gluten free options, including a great looking beetroot and goats cheese salad with hazelnut dressing and a smoked salmon.
New Chapter has two well designed and stylish private rooms downstairs, which would be great for groups or parties. And the quality of food would make for a great dinner. Also open upstairs in the evenings, New Chapter is already proving popular, so it’s a good idea to book.
Using some great Scottish ingredients including Scrabster Monkfish, Ullapool Scallops,Borders Venison and Beef, the quality of cooking comes through and I can tell after seeing only a few dishes, this is definitely going to be a new favourite place.
