Eating good quality gluten free food, mainly in Edinburgh

Bellfield trials GF barley

The brilliant people at Edinburgh based, Bellfield Brewery, have announced they will be the first in the UK to run brewing trails with a new, gluten-free barley from Australia.  Over the coming months, the dedicated gluten-free brewery is going to experiment with Kebari™, the world’s first gluten-free barley.

We already have the two fantastic gluten free products from Bellfield now available at a wide range of stockists and restaurants across the city and beyond,  so this new development brings a naturally gluten free beer closer to reality.  The new grain meets the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) recommended classification of gluten-free and has taken scientists in Australia’s Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), thirteen years to perfect.

Benefits brought by the new grain will include a simplified production process and for other breweries, might reduce the need to pump beers full of enzymes to remove gluten – which is great news.

Brewer and Brewery Manager, Kieran Middleton, commented on the new grain’s potential: “We’re hoping that Kebari™ barley may allow us to brew a wider range of beer styles that everyone – whether coeliac or not – can enjoy.  These new trials continue our strong commitment to R&D and innovation in brewing. Last year we completed a research programme with Heriot-Watt’s Institute of Brewing and Distilling. We’ll soon be starting another round of research and recipe development so that we have a pipeline of tasty gluten-free beers.  Kebari ™ barley has the potential to be a game changer, in allowing us to brew darker beers with even greater flavour, without using enzymes or other additives.”

So if you are a beer drinker and have not yet tried the newish Bellfield Brewery beers, give them a go.  And if you are already a fan, watch this space for more news on Edinburgh’s own home-produced GF beer!
