The area around Bruntsfield and north Morningside is fast becoming a gluten free enclave. Since my recent Bruntsfield round-up, I have had several people ask me to review Organic Delicious which is on Morningside Road opposite the Church Hill Theatre.
The clue is in the name: everything here is organic, fresh, locally sourced and of course, delicious. The decor is fresh and cute, the choices good and the service just the friendliest ever – there is even a sofa!
So, my gluten-eating husband and I visited on Saturday lunchtime with the view of tasting a few of the things on offer and reporting back. Organic Delicious has a lovely relaxed vibe and with everything cooked and prepared from scratch, it is most definitely not fast food. There are some amazing smoothies packed with good stuff and made fresh every time, piles of salads, vegan chilli, a soup of the day which is always GF and sandwiches. For the gluten eaters, the bread looks amazing and for the rest of us they serve the Biona rice and sunflower bread – a pretty good option when toasted. But you do not need the bread as the whole place is geared to deal with allergies, so you are in good company.
I enjoyed a fantastic bowl of salad, including leaves, lentils with roasted squash and a pile of freshly made humous. It was all really tasty and served beautifully. My husband opted for a veggie sausage sandwich with salad on a fantastic looking bit of ciabatta (gluten loaded, of course) and he also tried a very zingy smoothie.
They had a few gluten free options for cake, though they looked a little bit health, but I believe that they sometimes have more options than when we were in. So it is worth calling by to see, as they also do takeaway and have a great little selection of those nutty, fruity pre-packed snack bars too.
So if you are looking for some vegetarian, healthy and gluten free food that is both ecological and delicious, this is the place for it. It is a fab place for a relaxed lunch and it is child-friendly too.
