When I recently reviewed gluten free cafes and shops in Bruntsfield, I stopped by the Moon & Hare very briefly. It is a really nicely laid out cafe and I was already aware that it is fully gluten free and vegan.
This time I had a longer visit and bought some takeaway food to try. It is a really welcoming space and the table in the window would be a terrific spot for coffee and gluten free cake. Ah, the cake. Yes – it is very good! I had a slice of gluten free and vegan carrot cake, which was dense and moist with a slight spiciness to it and with the nicest topping. With pumpkin seeds, cranberries and orange on the top, it was really pretty too.
The menu at the Moon & Hare is largely salads, wraps, smoothies, coffee and cake, with the WHOLE cafe gluten free, vegetarian and vegan. However, while the cynical might think this makes it “alternative”, it really is a place that is focused on high quality, tasty food and is definitely worth a visit.
I also enjoyed a bean, pepper and kale salad, which was a good mix of flavours and textures. With the cafe offering takeaway, this would be fantastic for a workday lunch – I wish it was near my office …
The quality ethos runs throughout everything, from the decor to the food, drink and service. It is a place to seek out – and how fantastic that you do not have to tell anyone you are coeliac or intolerant!
Just up the road is the great 181 deli, seller of the full range of Findlaters gluten free bread – and I love that 181 asked if I had visited the Moon & Hare – clearly Bruntsfield is a collaborative and friendly community. You can read my recent runthrough of gluten free places in Bruntsfield here.
