We’ve always been a fan of the gluten free friendly Loudons cafe on Fountainbridge. How exciting that they’ve opened a bigger cafe in the New Waverley area close to the station.
Loudons is one of the most gluten free focused cafes in town. The menu has a clearly marked, big range of options suitable for coeliacs and they also make their own bread and “English” style muffins. The Loudon’s Benny – a signature brunch dish – comes on an English muffin and includes spinach, smoked salmon, poached eggs and a turmeric, lime and dill yoghurt. As it is a classic, I tried it out when dining with friends. It was delicious! The muffin was more like a delicious, crumbly scone and the eggs were poached beautifully. The yolk was just turning, the spinach and salmon were slightly salty and then the yoghurt was tasty and dribbled all over the top. Loved it!
My gluten eating friends enjoyed similar brunch items, all of which could be created GF. There are also some tasty looking cakes; a GF quiche and salad, which I have tried before and it is terrific; and the lunch options are good too. The curry looks great – and I should also point out that the staff are lovely and friendly.
With coffee, a gorgeously zingy carrot, apple and ginger juice and some good coffee, this goes right to the top of the Edinburgh gluten free brunch choice. The Fountainbridge cafe can get busy and you can’t book, but this one is much more roomy and because the area is still being developed, there are plenty of seats.
Loudons is only one minute from the Royal Mile and about 3 minutes from the station.
