Eating good quality gluten free food, mainly in Edinburgh

Treacle Bar

It is great to go out for a dinner exceeds your expectations. I went for early dinner with a friend last night at Treacle Bar and Kitchen on Broughton Street expecting something more like a cocktail bar than a restaurant, only to find really great food.

treacle2The key thing for we non gluten eaters is that Treacle has a superb range of gluten free food that is above and beyond the ordinary. Noodles, spicy salads, burgers and a great range of treats which are well marked as gluten free – much more than most menus offer. You really will be spoilt for choice.

We chose first off to share a plate of nachos with cheese, guacamole, sour cream and salsa. Now it is hard to get pretentious and foody about a plate of nachos, so I shall just tell you they were really cheesy and very tasty. If you were going to Treacle for some of the amazing sounding cocktails, this would be the ideal thing to order. And the cocktails are extensive and sound utterly original.

treacle3For mains we chose pad thai noodles (which came in a takeaway box – a fun touch) and a huge bowl of soupy noodles with kaffir lime, pulled pork, kale and coriander – a slightly spicy bowl of light and tasty morsels, with a generous helping of noodles. Unfortunately my attack of the nachos meant I could not finish the noodles because they were so generous. You will not go hungry here!

There are two choices of gluten free pudding: a brownie with ice cream and salted caramel or sorbets. I had no room, but, to keep the side up, my gluten-eating, pregnant friend had a half portion of waffles, nutella and ice cream which looked gorgeous (for your non GF guests).

I am sure at the hour when Treacle turns into a late night bar, I am well in my bed. But the music was good even at 7 in the evening and the waiting staff were friendly, helpful and knew their stuff – I felt confident my food would be gluten free. I would certainly recommend this as a good place to go with a group of friends where you want lots of lovely cocktails and drink, but do not want to make a mistake in ordering the alcohol-absorbing carbs because you’ve had one too many. It has great atmosphere and I really commend something in this sector of the market which caters for dietary needs.

Treacle has an all day menu and it’s worth checking out the breakfasts: sweet potato, black bean and quinoa hash browns with poached eggs and avocado sounds amazing! Good and interesting gluten free breakfasts are hard to come by – and these are available all day!
