Edinburgh’s Royal Mile is really well served with coffee shops, great restaurants and plenty to see and do. It is a good place to enjoy a meander up to the Castle Esplanade, followed by tea and a slice of gluten free cake.
This afternoon I dropped into the Amber restaurant for a meeting at teatime, though my eye was set on the beautiful bar packed with whiskies. Set in the basement of the five star, Scotch Whisky Experience, it is no wonder that whisky is on the menu here. The bar has the largest selection of whiskies in Edinburgh, plus the restaurant serves a superb range of the finest Scottish food.
Today’s gluten free cake was a beautiful moist and dense Chocolate and Almond Cake, with a jokey little glace cherry on the top. I shared the cake with others, which is probably a good thing, as the portion was generous and the cake delicious. With a pot of peppermint tea, I was well set up for the afternoon.
The menu at Amber is adapted for gluten free diners and has a good range of options. And, of course, a glass of whisky on the side is another gluten free option!
Amber is good for lunch, dinner or just tea. And if you are tempted by the whisky, the tour is worth doing too – you will come away with new found whisky knowledge which will help you to understand what you are buying in the very stylish shop on the ground floor, or encourage you to be more adventurous with your whisky choices.
